Each bedroom will have a wash hand basin and you will be provided with towels and soap. Bathrooms are shared between 4-5 bedrooms unless you are in ensuite rooms. All rooms have tea and coffee-making facilities. Rooms are serviced daily by the Housekeeping staff.
History to the present day
Founded in 1596 Sidney Sussex is a very well-kept secret - whether it is Elizabethan brickwork, charming Cloister Court, the haunting Chapel, exquisite Rococo Hall, medieval cellars or beautiful ancient gardens - they all lie behind a rather self-effacing wall of Roman cement. Sidney's history is an even better-kept secret including the precise point at which Oliver Cromwell's head is buried.
As one of the smaller Colleges, Sidney Sussex has a strong community spirit and is known for its warm and friendly welcome to visitors.
Food and Drinks
All rates include a "Porters'' breakfast (a generous serving of a full English breakfast) prepared by the College’s award-winning chefs served in the magnificent Dining Hall.
Breakfast is served from 7.30 - 9.00am each day with the exception of Sunday when it is served from 8.30 - 10.00am.
Group dinners may be arranged in advance (please make your request in the Additional Information section of the booking form).
The College student bar is not open out of term, however, due to our city centre location there are numerous pubs located only a short distance away from the College.
Grounds and gardens
Sidney Sussex has two outstanding courtyards surrounded by Grade I listed buildings dating from 1596. The small and friendly atmosphere of the College can be sampled in the Fellows' Garden and Cloister Court where guests can sit and enjoy the peace and quiet in magnificent surroundings.

Customer feedback
We guarantee that all our feedback is genuine and can only be submitted by people who have booked through our websites.
Miss Belinda Cousens, January 2012: I would just like to say that we found the porters at Sidney Sussex College wonderfully welcoming and helpful, as were all the other College staff we encountered during out short stay.
Ms Joanna Bean, January 2012: The college is a stunningly beautiful place to stay. The rooms in Blundell Court are a generous size. However there was a problem with the boiler on Fri pm/ Sat am which left us without heating and hot water for a while. Otherwise, an enjoyable stay.
Mr Kay Joe Petzold, December 2011: Very good location. Good rooms. Very British breakfast with bad coffee. A bit sparse information about where to find the shower. Overall worth of a Recommendation and a great experience. I would choose this College again.
Ms Adele Pashley, December 2011: Wonderful room in beautiful building and setting.Great service and very convenient location. It felt very special to stay there.
Dr Ellen Cohn, December 2011: Everyone at Sidney was very helpful and considerate. The location was perfect - convenient to everywhere I needed to go. The room was very comfortable. My only request would be to receive a key card to the back gate near Blundell Hall so I could be dropped off or picked up at college by car.
Mrs Diane Burscough, December 2011: It was very good alround and I had an enjoyable stay thankyou
Mrs Bernadette Gregory, December 2011: Very good standard of accommodation - useful to have access to a communal kitchen and to have a fridge in the room. Very clean and warm - much appreciated on a cold and wet December's day! Would definitely recommend.
Prof Jim Bryant, December 2011: My first visit and now I'm sure it will not be my last. Brilliant location and access (public transport). Porters efficient and helpful. Generous breakfast in splendid setting. Spacious room (if a little cool and spartan - but that's what student rooms are like!). Couldn't find bath/shower room.
Mr Henry Edmundson, October 2011: A fantastic and friendly place to stay, very central.
Dr Paul Mitchell, October 2011: A beautiful place to stay in Cambridge. The college is central yet quiet at night, and it has fine gardens that look splendid in the morning sun. The staff are exceptionally polite and most helpful, and the breakfast is first class.
Mrs Anna Mari Eronen, September 2011: It's an amazing place!!! The service is good!
Dr Ben Parker, September 2011: Very pleasurable experience all round; the accommodation is basic but comfortable and I enjoyed my stay.
Mr John Benjamin Miller, September 2011: Excellent and friendly porters!
Other Elaine di Campo, August 2011: It was a memorable experience and the staff. porters and surrounding was exceptional thank you
Mrs Lin Li, August 2011: We enjoyed living in Sidney Sussex College. The rooms are bright, clean and fresh, facilities are convenient. The view from windows are fabulous with green tree leaves and red fruit. We enjoyed reading in the room and hearing birds sing by the window.
Breakfast has so many choices, cold and hot food and drinks. The service is excellent. Every staff professionally considered needs from guests and give smile to people.
Specially, the porters, they are very polite, friendly and helpful. They made us welcoming, gave us clear instructions when check-in, they helped me at any time when I asking questions or helps, once I came back late night and locked in my key. They also appreciated our living and hoped we coming back again on my check-out.
Those excellent people are making all the excellentcy of the university.
Mr Paul Boland, August 2011: My three night stay at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, was great. The room was bigger then I expected, the shared facilities were clean and very well maintatined, and the view from my bedroom window was like staying at Hogwarts Castle from Harry Potter, it was just astounding! My one and only compaint is there was no television in the room. When I returned to my room at night, I had nothing to do, nothing to keep me occupied until I fell asleep. I appreciate that these are student accommondations, but I think even a small television in the rooms would help to ease the emptiness of the room. Apart from that one issue, I have no problems recommending Sidney Sussex College and I would stay there again.
Mr Vinay Talwar, August 2011: Did the trick! Decent sized room and breakfast. Friendly porters too. Wifi connection non-existent though.
Mrs Mary Foote, August 2011: I would happily go again
Mr Mihai Catalin Frunza, August 2011: Every thing was wonderful. The price, the room - big, very confortable, with green fields around the building.
The only disadvantage was that in the room was no bath. But nnthe less, it was always free (in my floor) and very clean.
Mr Matthew Noble, August 2011: Very clean room, wonderful location and the breakfast was delicious.
Miss Sophie Dewar, August 2011: All very easy. Excellent central location, great size room and good value for money. The porters at the college could not have been more friendly or helpful. I would definitely stay again.
Mr john deehan, August 2011: good service
Other Michael Pacella, August 2011: The staff was very helpful, kind and generous.
Miss Christina Andreasson, July 2011: Very close to college. Nice, helpful and very friendly staff.
Mr Juergen Schwab, July 2011: Staying in one of the traditional Colleges of Cambridge was is great and interresting experience, fitting perfectly into the athmosphere and ambiente of this beautiful and historic township ......
And it did give some impression of the student's way of life in this surrounding, that was highly interresting for me as a foreigner.
Service and friendlyness at the College were good indeed.
So, I already look forward to the next visit,
Miss Kristal Enter, July 2011: My room was very modern and quiet! Perfect! And the porters were extremely helpful and the location of the college can't be beat!
Ms Cynthia Frazer, July 2011: It was a wonderful experience to stay in a Cambridge University College, to be able to walk through the quads and to have breakfast in the Great Hall, and then to walk out of the front door into the centre of Cambridge. I shall be recommending it to my friends!
Cynthia Frazer
Miss Hye Ryung Kang, July 2011: Exellent service, facilities and environment. Situated in the heart of Cambridge city centre, it allows the student to have a great opportunity to study with convenience. I could really focus on my study with the scholarly atmosphere. Grat! :)
Ms Pauline Smith, July 2011: We had an enjoyable time at the Sidney Sussex College. It is a great location to use as a central point to view Cambridge. The porter was very informative and really helpful.
Mr Keith Brewer, July 2011: The purpose of my visit was to see my grandson graduate, and being able to stay in his College was a bonus. The whole visit, booking, and help on arrival was very good, and I would recommend it. I hope to return at some stage.
Dr Paul Mitchell, July 2011: Friendly staff who were most helpful. I enjoyed my stay.
Mr William Marshall, May 2011: Cheerful and willing welcome, excellent location, fresh, simple and comfortable accommodation. Worthy cause. Ideal.
Christine Taylor, April 2011: Bed was a bit lumpy! Otherwise very good value. Will use this service again.
Elaine Feather, April 2011: Everything was perfect. The only thing that might have made it better was if I could have got a parking space as I am disabled but having said that I was able to park just round the corner in Jesus Lane the whole weekend and it was fine. Thankyou for a lovely stay :))
Prof David Uzzell, April 2011: Efficient service, friendly, good value. Will book again
Dmitrii Alexander Singer, December 2010: very friendly and helpful porters.
Helga Greenwell, October 2010: My sisters and I felt very well looked after and appreciated the friendly help we received from the porter´s lodge.
Staying at Sidney Sussex College was a great experience for us. Thank you.
Dorothy Davies, September 2010: Beautiful location. Long trek to lavatory and shower was a drawback.
Tamsin Knight, September 2010: I booked on behalf of my visitor to Cambridge, Marthinus Horak. The above assessment is mine based on his comments. He had a wonderful stay, thoroughly enjoyed the location, the history, and the delicious breakfast and the opportunity to speak with visiting academics. Thank you.
Andrew James, September 2010: Great to be back at Sidney, always fun, and the renovated Blundell rooms were a treat.
Tracey Bishop, September 2010: Very well organised and easy to manage - from booking to liaison with the college prior to the stay and the helpful Porters during our visit.
Rooms were clean, bright and comfortable and the location of the college is perfect.
Thank you
Teemu Rinta-aho, September 2010: Lovely old buildings, excellent location, great value for money.
Jillian Wallace, September 2010: On the whole very good value for money for a single ensuite room - and great central location.
Just some minor quibbles - no bulb in desk light in room, cooked food for breakfast only lukewarm. Would have appreciated a TV in room, but can't have everything for price paid.
Bryan Mellor, September 2010: An extremely enjoyable experience for all of us. We were made to feel welcome from the start, and college staff could not have been more helpful. We chose rooms in the older part of the college, which have been modernised but have lost none of their sense of history.
Hilmar Schaefer, September 2010: A public internet terminal for guests would be a great addition to your otherwise excellent service. I enjoyed my stay very much!
cheung a, August 2010: I started out looking for UK campus boarding experience and had my expectation fulfilled with one full of history and tradition. The accommodation whether for tourists (who know what they asking for) or students is beyond value for money.
The room (and every room as I can see) has exclusive private view to the garden as the results of a nicely planned / natural foilage. one can sit and read next to the window without worrying being seen from outside.
The seats in the guests' garden are thoughtfully placed under the tree on a gravel path. Thus, though guests cannot walk on the lawn, they can sit near it.
The vegetarian sausage (VS) in the breakfast is good. Most VS is overly spiced, hard and dry. The ones in the Porter's Breakfast is different. Besides, it is obviously VS and people consume it without worry. Some VS is made to look too much like non-VS. The amount is generous and the eggs are nicely cooked.
Location excellently close to everything and yet the college is well sound-proved from the busy streets.
Yet to find out more about the Cromwell Wing and the haunting chapel. If more of some of such facilities can be opened to visitors...
The porters I met are friendly and witty in the classic British manner.
Caroline Hawkes, August 2010: 3rd visit to Cambridge - 2nd to Sidney Sussex. Room even better than last year - lovely outlook over the garden. Sister-in-law disappointed by breakfast - no scrambled egg and croissant not fresh. Good coffee though!
Miss Sally Shand, August 2010: We did enjoy our stay. Just one or two comments. We missed access to any news via radio or TV. The TV room was across the road which was not enticing. I am aged 76 and found the doors very heavy to push!!! And the lack of any car parking facilities could have completely stopped us from coming. Fortunately we had a friend living in Cambridge who lent us parking space. Othersie all was really good.
Brenda Beech, August 2010: It was a lovely place to stay; central situation, friendly welcome, gloriously peaceful, basic room but a very comprehensive breakfast!
Dr. Eleanor Fisher, August 2010: Quiet and peaceful even on a Saturday night in the town centre. Meticulously clean, including the kitchen facilities. I would have appreciated a disposable bathcap!
yang yi, August 2010: fantastic place to live in at Cambridge. Central located, just opposite to the main supermarket Sainbury. walkable distance to King's college and other symbolic resorts. Great breakfast in an antique hall offer you a range of food. And the service girls are super-friendly in particular. Definitely will stay there again if I am back to Cambridge. Strong recommended!
Norma James, August 2010: I would certainly recommend University-Rooms.com and will be using the service again in the future.
Johan T du Toit, August 2010: My only gripe was that internet access had to be arranged in advance, which is archaic and rather inconvenient for travelers needing to log in to confirm flights and other travel plans, manage e-mail, etc., especially since internet cafes are almost non-existent in Cambridge. A simple wireless (wi-fi) service would make all the difference. But overall it was an excellent overnight experience, and the breakfast was great!
john kane, August 2010: excellent on all aspects. will definitely recommend your facilities to any potential visitor to your city. j.kane.
Wong Kar Yan Alice, August 2010: The wireless internet access is the first thing to attract me for booking the ensuite bedrooms in Blundell Court. Given its central location within Cambridge campus, it is a better deal than I can ever get from the conference event held at New Hall!
Michael Hepworth, August 2010: really enjoyed the stay. room overlooking garden excellent. shower nice and powerful. college central with beautiful chapel. would definitely come again.
a small caveat: why no veggie sausages? they are cheap and easily available these days.
corinna elsenbroich, August 2010: Lovely place to stay - lovely rooms and the porters are extremely friendly and helpful!
Angela Shaw, August 2010: My room had a quiet garden view & the housekeeping staff happily attended to my requests. The college is in an excellent location.
Yee Lee, August 2010: Excellent central location directly opposite Sainsbury's to stock up on any midnight munchies or essentials. Shops, bars, clubs and restaurants on your doorstep! If coming by car then can park in the nearby Park Street car park, although this can work out rather expensive; lots of parking restrictions so probably best to avoid driving. Lovely, hearty full English or Continental breakfast in beautiful, Harry Potter-esque hall.
Gunn Irene Stenberg Benkow, July 2010: We had a plaesanr stay i Cambridge, and my son cant wait to start studying in your university. Thank you for all your help!
mrs Benkow
Lynda Leslie, July 2010: I'm so glad I chose to stay here rather than a single room in a hotel. This was so central, so much cheaper and so interesting.
Mrs Julie Poole, July 2010: loo/shower floor below, and had to queue both mornings by sitting on staors to shower. Key problem both nights trying to gain entry even with spare from lodge, but not that inconvenient! The view over the garden and being in the heart of the city made the lodging superb. My daughter was at Sidney and so it was great to return after 20 yrs or so, to attend the grad of another daughter [PhD!] Many thanks, Julie Poole, St Andrews
Shengya Zhang, July 2010: nice room except far away from the porter's lodge.
Mr Clive Nicol, July 2010: Hello
Was very nice overall. Just a fraction overpriced - but then again in a great location so I am sure many will continue to be ok with it :0)
The only point - the radiator was fully ON, as opposed to fully OFF - my fault for not noticing till morning... I thought it was just the hot weather - but I still slept well.
Thanks, Clive Nicol
Ranald Barnicot, July 2010: Generally very comfortable accommodation in beautiful surroundings.
Helen Gale, July 2010: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the college; the room, breakfast and service were excellent. It would have been nice to have a shower on the same floor rather than having to go down 2 flights of stairs.
Jane McKeever, July 2010: Had a lovely stay. Perfect location, porters were great and the rooms were really clean. Could have done with hangers in the wardrobe.
Lisa Lees, July 2010: Portering staff were excellent. Very friendly, helpful and knowledgable about the college and town in general.
Jonathan Rees, July 2010: Hi
It was a great treat to stay in Sidney and be able to wander the quads, and the porter was really friendly and helpful. The real downside for me was that the room was absolutely sweltering, the noise from the street below was dreadful, and I hardly slept ! The weather isnt your fault of course, but the roof must be poorly insulated!
I will come again, I had a great weekend, but will be sure to request a room away from the top floor and facing inwards!
Thanks for asking,
Regards
Jonathan
Dr Joanne Smith Finley, April 2010: Fantastic central location; beautiful historic surroundings; fabulous breakfast; excellent value for money - but could you maybe provide vegetarian sausages?
Ms Judy Merry, April 2010: We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The accommodation was central, full of character, and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. While the corridor and to a lesser extent the rooms were over-heated, we understand that the heating system is an old one and the fluctations in temperature unavoidable. We would certainly stay here again.
Mrs Diane O'Donovan, April 2010: This is the second time I have stayed in university rooms, and this occasion was even better than the first.
michelle snoddy, March 2010: I really recommend staying at the university. I stayed in Cromwell Court around the corner from the main building. It was so central and the porters were lovely, really helpful. The breakfast was great. I would definetely use this service again
John MacGabhann, March 2010: Very convenient to city centre, immaculately clean room. An excellent option for short stays.
M Fargher, March 2010: Very welcoming, central location, excellent breakfast.
Porters very helpful.
Will be booking again. Highly recommended
Dr. Christian Renner, February 2010: It was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, beginning with the friendly porter, continuing with a traditional college room, that has many years of college life imprinted, accompanied by a quiet secluded garden in the centre of Cambridge and completed by the delicious breakfast in the impressive dinig hall.
I loved the air of college tradition that could be felt everywhere and I will try to book again in Sidney College whenever I come to Cambridge again.
Tim Pilcher, August 2009: A smart, clean and quiet room with modern ensuite facilities. The breakfast available was excellent, though only for a rather short period of time. Vacating the bedroom room by 9.30am was earlier than hotels require. Nonetheless, I had an enjoyable stay and would happily return.
Caroline Hawkes, August 2009: We had a lovely two days. Sidney Sussex was a great place to be - central yet quiet. Staff at the college were helpful without being too intrusive. We'll be back again!
Haruka Tamura, August 2009: It was fantastic experience! The most worth thing was breakfast in the dining hall. There are a high table in the front and many portraits around the wall, we felt like being in the Harry Potter movie.
Lynne NELSON, August 2009: The Porter and the Chef were really helpful and made our stay very pleasant. Would definately use the accommodation again and would like to stay longer next time. Excellent value for money. Thanks
Malcolm Gamlen, July 2009: Very helpful staff.
Peter Grant, July 2009: The bike shelter is excellent. This is an excellent place for bicycle tourists.
Anne Tabbner, July 2009: The Welcome and service from the College Porters was excellent and set the scene for an enjoyable week-end in Cambridge. Thank you very much.
David Moore, July 2009: An anjoyable stay with good facilities. I may well return.
Rebekah Nulsen, April 2009: We stayed in a part of Sidney Sussex College apart from the porter's lodge and breakfast place, but once we figured the goegraphy out it was cool: nice, clean rooms very conducive to study and relaxation, at a great price and in a great location. Useful to know up front you have to vacate by 9:30am, as most travellers like the post-breakfast down-time and for a last walk around, but basically a top notch experience, staying on campus and enjoying the vibes of Cambridge.
Monica White, April 2009: My only suggestion would be porridge or some non-sugary cereals with breakfast. Otherwise, everything was excellent. The porters were especially helpful.
Mike Burton, April 2009: A minor point- Door closers are a bit noisy, especially on the shower room
Other than that, perfect!
