While the college itself is quiet and peaceful, a short walk brings you to the very heart of the city, making Downing an ideal location for visitors on a leisure break or in Cambridge on business.

The rooms are used by Undergraduate students during term time but are fully equipped for the modern day traveller, with facilities such as a flat screen television and a spacious desk with free broadband internet connection. A telephone, alarm clock, hairdryer and tea and coffee making facilities are also provided, and rooms are cleaned daily by the College ‘bedders’.

Please note: We are unable to accept bookings for Stag and Hen parties.

History to the present day

Downing College was founded in 1800 by Sir George Downing, with wealth left by his grandfather, who served both Cromwell and Charles II and built No.10 Downing Street. When the front door of No. 10 was replaced in the 1960s, the original was donated to Downing College, and is now the door to the College Office.

Food and Drinks

A full English breakfast is included, and is served in the recently restored Dining Hall. Breakfast is available from 8am-9am, and is self-service.

Grounds and gardens

Downing is set amidst 20 acres of lawns and trees, making it a very spacious college. The East Range, Rose Gardens and the Paddock are open for visitors to enjoy during the day.

Other facilities

Parking within College may be available but is not guaranteed.

The Lt. Col. Anderson Gym and two outdoor Tennis Courts are available for guests to use, although we are unfortunately unable to provide tennis equipment. Please book these facilities at the Porters' Lodge.

Customer feedback

We guarantee that all our feedback is genuine and can only be submitted by people who have booked through our websites.

, December 2011: Very good and helpful service from porters. The facilities were good . I would use the College again , assuming places available

, December 2011: Very good way to stay in a place like Cambridge for tourists (we are French). In the center of the city, no need to take the car to visit the town (free car park at college) and a way to feel to be a student..... I do recommand

, October 2011: I truly enjoyed my visit!

, September 2011: I was very impressed with Downing College and all the facilities provided in such a tranqil setting.

, September 2011: Accommodation at Downing was great; very nice quarters, excellently serviced; delicious breakfast at the Hall; gorgeous grounds; close to the city center: I liked every minute of it!

, September 2011: I thoroughly enjoyed my week here and would suggest to any one travelling at this time of year to take advantage of the very pleasant staff and surroundings of the college. The central location is brilliant and extremely quiet. The rooms are better than some of the local 4 stars i have stayed in.

, September 2011: Thanks so much for the opportunity to stay in such a wonderful location. And special thanks to the porters for their assistance, friendlyness and warm welcome, and of course for their British humour! Whenever we have the possibility to come back, we'll do so!

, September 2011: An excellent place to stay, fantastic room and a great location.

, September 2011: Our stay at Downing was very comfortable; easily the best ensuite facilities we experienced at various college accommodations in England during this holiday.

, September 2011: Fantastic room and service. Thank you. Alex

, September 2011: We had fantastic stay- better than a hotel in Cambridge. The porters were outstanding, and the environment, ambiance, room & facilities , breakfast, parking, location were all excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to book again, though I might ask for a non-ground floor so as to avoid a bit of noise. OK the breakfast and check out could have a later deadline but it suited us.

, September 2011: Room exceeded expectations.Staff friendly but professional. Rooms overlooking quad so peaceful.

, September 2011: Wonderful place to stay: gracious buildings, good room, very central, very quiet - and very close to the magnificent Fitzwilliam museum. Porters' lodge very helpful. Criticisms? One of the twin beds squeaked mercilessly.

, August 2011: Very satisfied, good location for visiting Cambridge.

, August 2011: Immaculate room, and an excellent standard of service from all staff. Would recommend without hesitation.

, August 2011: Excellent - conference room standard high - wedding reception service and cuisine very good indeed - delightful setting in Downing College and its 28 acre grounds. Plentiful parking spaces. The best place to stay in Cambridge !

, August 2011: The rooms were great and the service very helpful, would use this venue again

, August 2011: Excellent on the whole. Only thing lacking was no waste bin in the bathroom.

, August 2011: excellent standard of rooms

, August 2011: A slightly later check out would have been helpful - perhaps to 11am. Rooms were lovely and the overall venue -stunning. Perfect for my friend's wedding!

, July 2011: I had a wonderful time there, and the views were to die for!

, July 2011: Do not think "student accomodation" Think "4 star hotel room". Honestly....excellent room in beautiful surroundings. DO NOT MISS BREAKFAST....full cooked English, cereals, coissants (everything you could wish for). If you don't eat breakfast, just go for a cup of coffee for the chance to eat in Downing's stunning Hall. Haven't had such value for money for a long time.

, May 2011: My son and I both enjoyed the experience and will repeat it if possible and have recommended it to friends.

, April 2011: I was expecting an Internet Wi-Fi connection avaiable for iPad, because I did haven´t other device to access de internet during my stay. Beside this point the College is a very pleasant place to stay and I really appreciated.

, April 2011: The welcome began at the Porters' Lodge and then at breakfast. A wonderul way to visit Cambridge. We will definitely stay at this beautiful college again.

, April 2011: We had very pleasant 2-night stay in this beautiful college, with the added advantage of car-parking in the centre of Cambridge. The porters, in particular, were very welcoming and very helpful.

, March 2011: Fantastic! Why stay in a hotel when you can stay at one of the historic Cambridge University colleges.

, March 2011: A really good experience. The porters were friendly and informative. The standard of the room excellent - with lots of nice touchs. The sunshine was an added bonus.

, March 2011: When we first arrived we were allocated a key for a single room, although there were two of us staying. However this turned out not to be a problem, as when we contacted the porters lodge they sent someone quickly to sort out another room for us, which was perfect and although he apologised profusely for the inconvenience caused, we thought the second room was actually nicer than the first! Staying in the college was a great experience and we didn't miss any of the 'hotel luxuries' in our double ensuite which was equipped with hairdryer, toiletries, towels, tea& coffee facilities and a flatscreen TV. Once you leave regent st and enter the beautfiul grounds of the college the city sounds are drowned out and it was such a peaceful environment we felt really priviledged to enjoy. Breakfast was more than adequate, however it would have been good if they served after 9am as this was an early start for us. Overall, a great experience I would highly recommend.

, March 2011: Cannot fault anything.... the staff were extremely helpful and friendly! A great experience.

, March 2011: Great value for money for a room right in the centre of Cambridge. It's very quiet and peaceful. Breakfast was excellent, and the room was good (certainly compared to your usual student room). There is free internet connection included, which makes it ideal for a work visit (as I was).

, March 2011: Everything was superb, lovely rooms, great breakfast in fantastic hall, friendly and helpful Porter. Thank you.

, March 2011: We really enjoyed our brief stay. The room was comfortable and quiet, the porters friendly and helpful, and it provided a perfect place to stay during our Open Day visit.

, January 2011: The accommodation and setting were lovely - everything in the centre of Cambridge easily accessible, on site parking and helpful staff.

, December 2010: Overall extremeley pleased with our stay, delightful college with free parking in the centre of Cambridge. Excellent breakfast - but then I like a "hearty" fry up now and then. One minor point - only 1 bath and hand towel in the ensuite - booking was for 2 of us. Met the lady who does the rooms as we were leaving but she said she was not generally informed on room occupation numbers. Would definitely do this again, excellent value.

, September 2010: Had a great weekend in this fantastic town. Stayind in the college was a great unique experience

, September 2010: We enjoyed our stay at Downing College. Our bedroom was light, spacious and comfortable A few points: it wasn't until late in the evening of our arrival that we found the lavatory did not flush properly;we could not work out how to switch off the extractor fan in the bathroom so it remained on all night which was rather noisy;we went down for breakfast at 9.15 AM, not realising breakfast finished at 9 AM - but the dining room staff were lovely and provided a continental breakfast for us.

, September 2010: Having visited other universities as part of my OU degree, I was confident that the service would be good, my husband had never stayed at a college before and was pleasantly surprised. I would recommend staying at Downing College to any of my friends.

, September 2010: Wonderful stay in stunning surroundings. Particularly want to say how welcoming the porters were. Will definitely stay again.

, September 2010: Would book and stay with you anytime!

, September 2010: Porters Lodge staff were very helpful - v positive image for the University. Did not have breakfast as the dining hall had little appeal...went into town instead. Would certainly stay again.Thank you. Mike Rowe

, September 2010: compared to hotel accommodation in the city, Downing provided excellent value for money and was extremely central. We appreciated being able to park our car easily. It was great to look out of our bedroom window onto beautiful green spaces. A better breakfast than we have received in many a hotel.

, September 2010: We had an amazing time at Downing College. It was such a lovely place to stay and so much better than an over-priced hotel. We'll be back!!!

, September 2010: Thoroughly enjoyed my stay and cannot recommend it highly enough. Nice rooms, beautiful grounds, very helpful, friendly staff and perfect location. Will definitely stay with you again.

, September 2010: I had a wonderful stay at Downing College. We came by coach and the college was just across the green. The staff were all enormously helpful. The location is excellent and near all the facilities that Cambridge has to offer and I would definitely recommend it to my friends instead of staying at a hotel.

, August 2010: WOW!...at last a place worthy of the word fantabulous! he he...from the very helpful staff in the porters lodge on arrival to the excellent wedding service and staff at the reception capped finally by the sunniest smile from the girl on duty in the dinning hall for breakfast I've ever seen...cant reccomend staying here highly enough!!!...as Arnie said...I'll be back!!!

, August 2010: We, and our german guests were quite happy with the rooms and the services. We thank you very much for all supports especially the Porters Lodge. It was a beautiful wedding.

, August 2010: A very, very wonderful weekend. Downing provided a very special setting and wedding experience for us all. Our sincerest thanks.

, August 2010: We were very pleased with the standard of our room on the first floor. It exceeded our expectations of a student room and had every comfort that we required. The breakfast also catered for every taste with very nice lean bacon. An excellent stay, thankyou. Christine and Ian Clark

, August 2010: Porters at Reception pleasant & capable chaps but didn't know breakfast times. Room basic & characterful -- v happy with that. Unique Cambridge Uni ambience pleasing. Breakfast appalling ie poor food & lethargic staff -- way below commercial standards in both respects. Parking very useful indeed. I will check your website to see if my comments are posted.

, August 2010: In spite of being a little away from the oold colleges area, and in spite of the main entrance in a busy street, once you are inside the college site you feel as in an oasis of peace. I'd come back with pleasure when in Cambridge again.

, August 2010: Nice room with a lovely bathroom. Great surroundings, very quiet and yet very central. Free parking a great advantage

, August 2010: Room booked for guets at my daughters wedding. Fantastic overall experience.

, August 2010: Booked room for a wedding at Downing College fabulous experience if you are attending a wedding at a college then this really adds to the experience.

, August 2010: Downing is an excellent place to stay; comfortable, quiet, central, with ability to park a car and have breakfast, all within a beautiful college setting. The Porters lodge staff were efficient, friendly and helpful, as were the staff at breakfast. The room, a superior room, with ensuite was excellent, as was the breakfast .We will certainly stay again. My only complaint was that the webbsite was down, post my original booking, and prior to our stay, which stopped me from booking a second night at Downing. This we would have done. It is a shame that it is not possible to book directly through the college, as well, which was also reiterated at the Porters lodge. I thoroughly recommend Downing College .

, August 2010: I spent 3 nights here in early August. The great plus in my view of Downing compared to other Cambridge colleges is that it has on site parking. It is also well situated, opposite Parker's Piece (large parkland) and very close to various and varied restaurants. For the less discerning, there is a large Wetherspoons under 5 minutes away - The Regal which I can recommend, particularly if you are single traveller - acceptable meals and cheap beer. Only a 7 minute walk to the main shopping area. The porters are very friendly, helpful and witty. My room, N9, was an en suite single, first floor room that faced onto the Maitland Library and I was able to park nearby. Obviously these are student and not hotel rooms and are fitted out accordingly. I had a decent sized room with plenty of storage space and a large writing desk, single bed with easy chair. Whilst the descriptions say there is a flat screen television, it is in fact a small computer screen but it gets all the terrestrial channels and to be fair I am not aware of another Cambridge College that has televisions in rooms. There was a large bathroon and I was very pleasantly surprised to find a good sized bath with a shower over it and also a heated towel rail. Breakfast is in a lovely large dining room -cereal, fruit juice are provided as is a very good cooked breakfast - the fried bread is excellent! University Rooms guests had their own table as when I was there, the college had several courses on for overseas students so it could be busy especially at the start of breakfast at 8am. Downing has huge grounds which are a delight - I do think they could perhaps provide a few more seats so you can admire the wonderful views- it can be a bit of a 'hike' to the few that are available. It really is an oasis of peace and tranquility yet only minutes from the middle of Cambridge. Contrary to what it says on your card, check out time for B& B (University Rooms) guests is 11am and not 9.30am. A great place to stay - a college of character with lovely old buildings and grounds

, August 2010: We wanted to try the 'experience' and it was far better than we expected. It was a delightful room and we will stay again and recommend friends and colleagues to consider University Rooms. Can we book that room again specifically if it is free? June

, August 2010: Would definitely recommend styaing here to friends.

, August 2010: Brilliant online booking. Very satisfactory accommodation and overall service. My wide and I will definitely recommend Downing to any friends visiting Cambridge.

, August 2010: We had a great time and will book again. Wonderful facilities, and the breakfast was outstanding. What a lovely place to study.

, July 2010: We had an excellent experience. I especially enjoyed the porter's lodge staff - they were exceptionally kind and generous with their time and even gave us a personal tour of your splendid library. We would definitely recommend this facility to our friends and hope to return some day ourselves.

, July 2010: Very comfortable room and fun to be at a college, very useful to park easily right in the heart of Cambridge - at the top end of my price range but worth it

, July 2010: The porters were very friendly and the free car parking is a bonus in Cambridge. Setting was excellent.

, July 2010: Downing was stupendous ...great location not far from railway station .4 star room bathrobes.bath and TV !!!!!helpful and friendly staff .great breakfast .thought I was in a professor's room !!!Handy for bars shops and eateries nearby . enough said !!this place has it all.

, July 2010: Excellent central Cambridge location.

, July 2010: The accommodation was excellent, and the staff in the porter's lodge were very helpful. The short (and early) window for breakfast (8-9am) and check out at 9:30am was challenging after attending a wedding the night before.

, July 2010: I wish to comment on the helpful attitude of the accommodation and porter staff. A word fom the dining room staff would have helped me on the first morning but this is hardly a criticism. Downing is already recommended to several other people.

, July 2010: Overall a great and comparatively inexpensive way to visit Cambridge. Would certainly stay at Downing again.

, July 2010: I was very happy with the accommodation. I hope to be able to stay here again when i return.

, July 2010: Unfortunately I was not on the porter's list for a room but that was quickly resolved and from then on my stay was excellent throughout. It was a real bonus to be able to leave my car parked in the college grounds whilst I enjoyed myself in Cambridge. Congratulations to Downing College for providing excellent accommodation at a reasonable price. The staff in the porter's lodge were very welcoming and friendly and helpful with any questions.

, July 2010: The stay was awesome, the room was very modern and tastefully decorated, the bathroom in great condition. Everyone was very friendly. The breakfast was lovely. The only little negative point was that there was no wifi. But I'd definitely recommend it to anyone, as it's located very centrally with a car park at no charge.

, July 2010: Really enjoyable stay, with friendly staff and clean facilities. The breakfast was really delicious. Definitely a repeatable experience!

, April 2010: the staff in the porter's lodge at downing college were outstandingly helpful

, April 2010: Firstly, the weather was summer-like, so the warmth and sunshine emphasised the beauty of Downing College. The Portering staff were most welcoming on our arrival (earlier than the stated check-in time), our room was comfortable with views over the lawns. Although there was also a conference going on during our stay, the College felt an oasis of quiet and calm away from the Centre of Cambridge, which was only a 10 minutes walk away. The other colleges were heaving with tourists, so we really cannot fault our stay at Downing - a perfect short-break location.

, April 2010: Porters where very friendly and helpful in Downing College. The room was very clean with good amenities and a beautiful view of the gardens and grounds.

, April 2010: It was just perfect! The room was great, the Porters were very kind and allowed me to print a few pages that I needed for a Conference. A print service for scholars would be a good idea (of course payed). The only thing I didn´t like was the breakfast times, much too early, I never managed to have breakfast...

, April 2010: Great location and everything in the room worked. Superb breakfast in a beautiful hall set in lovely grounds. Very helpful staff at the porters lodge and in the dining room.

, April 2010: A unique play to stay, beautiful and peaceful surroundings. Wish we had been able to stay for longer.

, April 2010: We really enjoyed staying at Downing College and will book again in preference to a hotel in Cambridge.

, March 2010: Very relaxing, enjoyed my stay will certainly use these rooms again. Thank you

, March 2010: We had a superb stay - in the snow and ice. Room was excellent and we would certainly consider a return visit.

, March 2010: I had a wonderful visit and the gentlemen in the Porters lodge at the college were extremely helpful and friendly. It was a really pleasant experience and I am now telling everyone that they should look on your website first before booking a hotel. Who would have thought college rooms could be so lovely and so reasonably priced.

, March 2010: The whole experience was great right from our arrival at Downing with a warm welcome from the Porter's Lodge. The location was perfect as was the onsite parking. The grounds were lovely and the breakfast was excellent with a varied choice. Thank you, would definately recommend Downing College and your company.

, March 2010: I was at Jesus College 1967-70 but never visited Downing! What a revelation. Such pleasant surroundings and a luxurious room. How spoilt are today's students. I'm hoping to visit Oxford this year. Do you know of an organisation there similar to your own? Nick Mawer

, March 2010: We were very impressed with the overall experience. It was the first time I had ever booked university accomodation and would definitely do it again, as well as recommend it to others. The location of the college was perfect for our needs, and the standard of the accomodation was excellent. I feel I do need to mention the porters, who were so helpful, friendly and a real asset to the college!

, March 2010: We had a great stay at Downing. The porters were really helpful and friendly. The room was great with very nice ensuite bathroom. Lovely grounds too.

, March 2010: The ideal way to stay in central Cambridge - staff were helpful and courteous, environment lovely, and we could not only park safely but were free to come and go as we pleased - all for very reasonable cost.

, February 2010: The stay met all expectations - college staff were charming and helpful, the room was pleasant and clean, breakfast in the dining hall very enjoyable, the college grounds delightful - and at Downing there was free parking, which was a huge bonus.

, December 2009: The room was smart and clean. Downing College was quiet in a snowy mid-December, which made for a peaceful stay. All staff were friendly and cheery and there was a charming welcome at the Porters' Lodge. An excellent stay.

, August 2009: My wife and I stayed in an en-suite twin room, and found it to be very clean and suprisingly well appointed considering that it is in a hall of residence. The service was efficient and friendly, and the breakfast was good. The location is pretty good also. Would definitely stay there again, and would recommend it to others.

, August 2009: Overall great experience! The rooms were very nice, clean, and comfortable. The grounds were absolutely beautiful, pristine, and also nice and quiet. The porters were welcoming, friendly, and very helpful. The breakfast in the beautiful dining hall was good and filling. The location was convenient in that it is just around the corner from good restaurants, and the central part of the city, which we were grateful for because we had my 82-year-old mother with us, and she was very comfortable walking that distance. I would highly recommend staying here, in particular, and also using the Cambridge Rooms B&B network.
