Set in 42 acres of open parkland in the north west corner of the city, Churchill College's location is a ten minute walk (or a short bus ride) from the historic city centre. Parking, which is at a premium in this city, is free and plentiful at our college.

Accommodation is offered in contemporary courtyards that surround the main building and the heart of the college campus.

Whilst not old like some other colleges, the light, generously proportioned rooms fulfill the needs of the modern traveller, including a spacious desk and free broadband internet access (WiFi in public areas and ethernet point in bedrooms) with a hospitality tray and toiletries.

History to the present day

Churchill College is the National and Commonwealth Memorial to Sir Winston Churchill.

Founded in 1958, Churchill College was one of the first of the 'modern era' of Cambridge Colleges. It is also the only Cambridge College specifically established to pursue excellence in the teaching and research of science, engineering and technology. Nobel Prize winners Francis Crick, discoverer of the structure of DNA, and Anthony Hewish, the discoverer of the pulsar, were amongst its founding Fellows.

Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, the distinguished architectural historian, described the buildings of Churchill College as an 'outstanding conception' and the 'best of the new'. The buildings were designed by the architect Richard Sheppard, and were some of the first of the 1960's modernist tradition to be listed. The architecture pays reference to the traditional vernacular of inter-linked courtyards, but the style is decidedly contemporary.

Churchill College is also home to the Churchill Archive Centre which houses the papers of both Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher as well as some 700 other leading political figures. Visits to the archive can be arranged.

Food and Drinks

Full English and continental breakfasts are available and are served either in the college Buttery or the main Dining Hall.

Guests are welcome to use either the dining hall or the buttery on a cash basis subject to opening hours and occasional private bookings.

Churchill boasts the largest dining hall in Cambridge. Lunch and dinner and a brunch on Saturdays are served here and can be enjoyed by all visitors to the college.

Adjoining the main concourse, the Buttery is open throughout the day for snacks and drinks, (subject to some restricted opening times). This area provides free WiFi access to all guests. It provides the perfect space for catching-up with emails whilst relaxing with a refreshing drink, and a piano is available for those with a musical bent.

Grounds and gardens

Churchill has extensive grounds and gardens on site.

Our grounds are home to an extensive collection of contemporary sculptures from a variety of well-known artists. They provide the perfect backdrop for an hour or two relaxing in the sun with a cool drink and a good book.

Other facilities

Additional facilities for residents include an on-site laundry, a TV room, an all day bar and café (subject to some restricted opening times) and sports facilities including squash and tennis courts and a multi-gym. Sports equipment, irons and hair dryers can all be borrowed from the Porters' Lodge.

There is plentiful free parking on site.

Free Broadband access.

, September 2011: This college accommodation is good value for money. I stayed here when attending a conference at a nearby college which had much more expensive accommodation. It is a bit basic in that you have to share bathroom facilities, but I never once had to wait for the bathroom so it worked out fine. The bedrooms are large and clean with a desk which is handy if you are attending a conference.

, September 2011: Very impressed indeed. Excellent facilities and staff very helpful. I will recommend it to friends and family and will book again.

Having a parking place at the college made life so much easier. Additionally, I would like to point out the very high quality and wide choice offered in way of breakfast! Overall a very gratifying experience!

, August 2011: This was the first time my son and i had experienced the university rooms stay. It was a wholly excellent experience, as he is hoping to go to university next year and this helped him visualize what it might be like. I enjoyed it as it reminded me of my youth! We will certainly do it again.

, August 2011: Excellent value for money and a unique experience. all staff extremely helpful. the room was larger than most hotel rooms plus the extras of shower gel - a nice touch. We also used the canteen which was great value for money. Lovely to be able to stay in such beautiful surroundings.

, August 2011: Very good - better than a travel lodge! Just not such a fan of the creaking floor boards...

, August 2011: we needed somewhere to park the car in walking distance of the city centre. this was PERFECT. very impressed and will definitely consider university accomodation in future

, July 2011: Overall really great! Only 2 comments for improvements. There was no bedside light and no muesli at breakfast.

, July 2011: Enjoyed my stay at Churchill College very much. Great value and wish I had booked my entire stay in Cambridge at Churchill, not just the one night.

, July 2011: pleasant room and good standard of cleanliness, very nice outlook over the college grounds and variety of breakfast food available was very good.

, July 2011: We had a very pleasant stay at Churchill College . All the staff at the Porters Lodge were very helpful and friendly . Thanks to all .

, April 2011: We enjoyed our stay at Churchill College - well located only a short walk into the centre of Cambridge with excellent car-parking. All College staff were extremely welcoming and very helpful. We were a bit disappointed that whilst the double room was serviced after one day, the two single rooms were not.

, April 2011: Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice to be part of an academic environment in idyllic surroundings. City centre a 10 minute bus ride away.

, April 2011: More important to be somewhere significant than the standard of accomodation. It was better than my old college in Oxford!

, January 2011: Will certainly use Cambridge Colleges again and recommend them to friends and family

, December 2010: The room was rather cold.....otherwise all was fine. Good to be able to park car overnight. Excellent b'fast!

, December 2010: Very comfortable and perfectly acceptable. As we visit regularly to retrieve our daughter from another college I am sure we will be back if possible

, October 2010: A very enjoyable experience. I couldn't believe how helpful the porters were during my stay - nothing was too much trouble. Congratulations on an excellent service.

, September 2010: Very helpful porters, fine room, lovely experience for alumni weekend.

, September 2010: Very comfortable, with helpful porters at the college.

, September 2010: Great place to stay, the people have been really helpful and friendly. The room clean. I will return back

, September 2010: All was excellent - but espescially the breakfast - lots of choice and delicious. Also, the lady in charge of the breakfasts was very pleasant and helpful.

, September 2010: Was very pleased with the room, and the hospitality much more than i had expected from uni accomodation,. such as towels provided, i had taken my own. Amazing breakfast so much choice...and fried bread was the best!

, September 2010: Room was spacious, even the single that I had. I don't at all mind sharing facilities, but wish that there had been a shower and not just a bathtub. The men at the porter's lodge were as friendly as ever. Also, your website is inviting and easy to use.

, September 2010: I booked for two nights at Churchill College as I would be using the Churchill Archives. However, it is certainly a super place to stay when in Cambridge. The parking on site is a definite bonus but the general feel of the college where everyone is cheerfull and helpful adds to the pleasure staying at Churchill College. I spoke to others staying on a B&B basis. All without exception were more than happy, had enjoyed their stay and would come again; as will I. One benefit of staying at a University College is that the rooms have a large desk, something missing in most B&Bs. Thank you for the opportunity to give my view.

, September 2010: Excellent price/quality value

, September 2010: We had a lovely time in the most delightful environment and thank you very much.

, September 2010: We enjoyed our stay. Thank you.

, September 2010: Very good experience, the room was a good size , clean and we were not expecting tea and coffee making facilities. The only thing that might have improved our stay was that the room was a little cold.

, September 2010: Excellent hospitality, lovely toiletries in a handy bag and a spacious amount of room. Only drawback was the distance to the town center but it's not a very long walk, unless you have luggage. Not the best sound insulation if someone is staying in a room above your room. Very helpful porters!

, September 2010: Very helpful staff and good location.

, September 2010: Really excellent accom; perfect for our needs. Having a secure bike shed was really useful as well. Picked Churchill because of the free parking and again this was really useful. Only one minor point - the room was a little on the cold side - i should have got a heater from the porters.

, September 2010: If you don't a bit of a walk (between room and car park and into Cambridge itself) and have no need of a TV in your room, Churchill College represents an excellent value alternative to conventional hotel accommodation. I hope to stay again.

, September 2010: Very impressed. Helpful friendly staff, very good facilities and excellent breakfast. Would recommend to friends and family.

, September 2010: Churchill is a fantastic place to stay. As it is out of the city centre, albeit a short walk or bus journey, it was lovely and quiet compared to the centre itself on the Saturday night I stayed. There was also ample parking. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful, face-to-face and via email. To cap it all, the breakfast was superb! Ideal for a short break/ overnight trip.

, September 2010: Fabulous place to have a reunion. Will defnitely use University rooms again. Oh and the guys at the Porters lodge at Churchill College were awesome as my daughter would say!

, September 2010: We had a very pleasant weekend in Cambridge thanks. We were a little disappointed that there was no bar or coffee shop or similar open in the college during the afternoon as it would have been a good meeting place for our group but we were very impressed with the standard of the rooms, the access to the city and the breakfast. Many thanks.

, September 2010: The staff at Churchill were incredibly helpful and friendly.

, September 2010: I enjoyed my stay in the Churchill College very much, dispite the building and furniture are kind of old, or I would say with great historical sense. The service was excellent, breakfast was eceptionally goo and also with the very friendly and helpful security guards.

, August 2010: The porters were very friendly and helpful, the room was larger than we had anticipated and very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was good with plenty of choice. It compared very favourably with hotel rooms we have used. Overall it was a very pleasant stay. Thank you

, August 2010: We have stayed at Churchill College before and find it ideal for visiting family in Cambridge.

, August 2010: I think you should change the towels occasionally, they get rather dirty after a week.I saw a review criticising the communal showers, but I had no problems with finding it in use when I wanted it, and it was much better than the "pods" that other universities have.

, August 2010: I was there five days, and only discovered that there was computer access the day before I left. that information on arrival would have been much appreciated. overall I was well pleased. thank you.

, August 2010: Everything excellent, only exception being blocked drain of basin, otherwise no problems and. as always everyone very friendly and helpful.

, August 2010: I can't speak too highly of our stay at Churchill College. Staff were very friendly and helpful and the accommodation, in such lovely surroundings, surpassed many hotels we have experienced in the past. We would certainly visit Churchill again.

, August 2010: Thoroughly enjoyed our stay as we found ALL the staff very friendly and helpful. Would have liked to relax in the bar at night but understand with so few people staying there it's not practical. Would do it again!

, August 2010: I can't comment on the breakfast, as I didn't have any! But overall I really enjoyed my night there and would definitely recommend it to others.

, August 2010: Comfortable, very clean room. Quiet location. Excellent for overnight stay.

, August 2010: First time I have used university rooms and I would definitely recommend it. The staff in the porter's lodge were extremely helpful and welcoming.

, August 2010: I had a very pleasant and agreeable experience at Churchill College and enjoyed my short stay. I would certainly book a room in this college again.

, August 2010: I was extremely pleased with this stay. The rooms were clean and comfortable, service was friendly, and breakfast was better than most B&Bs! I won't hesitate to use these services again, or to recommend them to others.

, August 2010: Really good value stay

, July 2010: Exellent breakfast choice and quality. Rooms were as expected and good value for money. Will use again if in area at the right time.

, July 2010: It was a very relaxing mini-break, and a trip down memory lane to stay in halls again-thank you!

, July 2010: Happily surprised at the quality of the room and the campus itself. Having only left uni a few years ago, I wasn't expecting much, but it was very nice. I guess this is what you get if you go to Cambridge!! Great breakfast too. If I ever go to Cambridge again I will certainly use Churchill college again. Thanks

, July 2010: the staff at check in were pleasent and very helpful.

, July 2010: Very impressed

, July 2010: Enjoyed our visit Good value for money Small suggestion: An ATM cash machine near the Porter's lodge provided by a bank could be beneficial.

, July 2010: Very pleasant stay, thank you!

, July 2010: It's a bit remote, but the area is calm and quiet.

, July 2010: The staff was really friendly and hepful.

, July 2010: A side light would have been good. Massive bath not very good for saving water! Shower would have been better. Friendly and attentive porters and cleaning ladies. Great feeling of space.

, July 2010: The porters were extremely helpful and it was useful to be able to park the car.

, July 2010: As I was visiting Cambridge to work pretty intensively in the University Library, it was good to have car parking on site, as well as the opportunity to buy an evening meal.

, July 2010: Very spacious room in lovely surroundings. Better than I expected.

, July 2010: Excellent, going to stay again (twice in the next few weeks). Only complaint is the main car park being a long way from the check in desk and the lack of directions/information on parking closer.

, June 2010: As a first experience of staying in a Cambridge College it was one I would repeat without hesitation, and it was particularly stimulating to meet and converse with others staying at the college.

, June 2010: Just more attention to sinks ans showers... excellent location and very reasaonable rate for a very expensive city.

, April 2010: Great value for money and very convenient. Will recommend it. Many thanks. Phil Dickinson (second room booking)

, March 2010: I had a really lovely time at Churchill College. The food was inexpensive and abundant, the rooms were spacious and inviting, and all of the staff were very helpful. I especially liked the window-seats.

, March 2010: Very clean accommodation, excellant location, would stay again!

, February 2010: I really enjoyed the experience of B&B at Churchill College last August.Very clean room and surroundings, spacious grounds , convenient free road parking, a safe and quiet environment . 15 minute walk to the city centre. I would also like to book at other universities .

, February 2010: I really enjoyed my stay at Churchill College. The room was very nice and well-maintained. The meals in the dining hall (breakfast, lunch and dinner) were more than adequate. The Porters were very helpful in answering questions about the College, Cambridge itself, and public transit. It was also handy to be able to make a reservation only a few days before my arrival.

, February 2010: This was ideal for visiting Cambridge with a car and only a 10-15 minute walk from the centre and artistic places to visit such as Kettle's Yard and the Fitzwilliam, and restaurants for dining out in the evening. The campus has many sculptures of note and is lovely to wander around in the evening. The porters were very helpful. I would definitely return here if I wanted another couple of days in Cambridge during the vacation period. Beryl B

, October 2009: Porters at Churchill lodge very helpful for sorting telephone numbers in UK and giving advice to us. Bathrooms a bit primitive but great toiletries and teamaking facilities. Locks very noisy. Great for a one nighter.

, September 2009: Excellent value

, August 2009: Especially liked the free tea and coffee making facility and the toiletries. I didn't expect that in a hall of residence. Porter very friendly too.
