Murray Edwards is a modern, inspirational College that is delighted to welcome visitors and offers cheerful, friendly service in a relaxed atmosphere. The college is a pleasant 10-minute stroll over Magdalene Bridge and the river Cam to the historic city centre.
Bedrooms are bright and airy and include complimentary Fair Trade tea/coffee with biscuits, as well as toiletries, towels and bed linen. Many of the rooms overlook our beautiful informal gardens.
The Porters' Lodge is staffed 24 hours a day and our friendly, helpful Porters are happy to help with any queries you may have.
All rooms are within easy reach of the Porters' Lodge and dining hall.
Some rooms are situated on the ground floor and many bedrooms and most other areas of the College are accessible by lift. There are a limited number of rooms which are suitable for guests with access needs. Ideally those using wheelchairs should be accompanied by a companion. If you require further information on accessibility, please request this in the Additional Information section of the booking form.
History to the present day
The college was founded in 1954 to enable more women to take places at Cambridge University. At that time, the college had no name and no endowment, so was known as New Hall until June 2008, when Ros Smith (a New Hall graduate) and Steve Edwards gave the college two transforming gifts, an endowment of £30 million and a name, Murray Edwards College.
The college still has all-female students, but we have male Fellows and members of staff. Our unique dining hall, affectionately known as the "Dome" was designed by Chamberlain, Powell and Bonn and completed in 1965. Most of the original buildings are now Grade II listed and have undergone extensive renovation.
Food and Drinks
Full English breakfast is included in the room cost and available in the beautiful Grade II listed dining hall from 8:00 to 9:00am on weekdays and from 8:00 to 9:30am on Saturday and Sunday.
Although we are not able to cater for lunch and dinner, there is a wide range of pubs offering good food and several excellent Indian restaurants all within a 5 -10 minute walk of the college.
If you just need a snack, we have a hot drinks machine in the bar area close to the Porters' Lodge and also snack/cold drinks machine downstairs in the bar area.
The college bar is not available for general use and if open, is reserved for use by guests of private functions happening in college.
Grounds and gardens
We have beautiful, informal gardens, which our guests are welcome to enjoy. The only garden not available is the Fellow's Garden, which is reserved for the Fellows of the college.
Other facilities
The college is home to the unique New Hall Art Collection, which contains nearly 350 contemporary works by women artists. The Collection includes works by Maggi Hambling, Barbara Hepworth and Paula Rego. Much of the art work is on display in public areas of the college, so if you'd like to take an informal tour, an information leaflet is available from the Porters' Lodge.

To check in, please go to the Porters' Lodge, where you will be give directions to your room, a key and swipe card. Access to the college after 11:00pm is by the main front entrance at the Porters' Lodge.
The College is easy to reach by road, with good access from the M11, A14 and A428. If you're using sat-nav, the postcode CB3 0DR/number 61 will bring you straight to our main car park on Storey's Way, the car park is sign posted 'New Hall'.
The railway station is a 10-15 minute taxi journey away and access from the Park and Ride site on Madingley Road is simple - just hop off the bus on Bridge Street and walk up the hill.
We have parking for bicycles, close to the Porters' Lodge.

Belatedly, I discovered that the very frequent Citi 7 bus route stops about 150 metres from the college in Histon Road, and also runs direct to/from the station. Definitely worth a mention !

The shower was not very practical as it wet the floor of the whole bathroom. It also required a deep clean and the control was difficult to use. The Reception and dining staff were very helpful. Because of the convenience we would consider staying again.

Spotlessly clean, so much so I walked barefooted on the carpet and I rarely do that outside my home.
The porteress (is that what you call a female porter?) was lovely and very helpful.
The shower was amazing. The sheets crisp and clean. The breakfast was yummy but it would have been nice to have been able to take a pot of tea or coffee to the table because my cup of tea got cold real quick...my only quibble!!

Mrs Sabrina Gwynn, July 2010: Following my booking I received a lot of help in finding somewhere suitable to eat. We enjoyed our meal at the Castle Inn. Fortunately we arrived there at about 8.45pm as it stopped serving meals at 9pm which we hadn't been told!
Our room was well appointed and very comfortable. My father was a little bothered at not being able to find loose sugar to put on his cereal at breakfast. They only had lumps for hot drinks. However this was only a minor point and we very much enjoyed our brief stay.
