The Porters' Lodge is staffed 24 hours a day and our friendly, helpful Porters are happy to help with any queries you may have.
All rooms are within easy reach of the Porters' Lodge and dining hall.
Some rooms are situated on the ground floor and many bedrooms and most other areas of the College are accessible by lift. There are a limited number of rooms which are suitable for guests with access needs. Ideally those using wheelchairs should be accompanied by a companion. If you require further information on accessibility, please request this in the Additional Information section of the booking form.
History to the present day
The college was founded in 1954 to enable more women to take places at Cambridge University. At that time, the college had no name and no endowment, so was known as New Hall until June 2008, when Ros Smith (a New Hall graduate) and Steve Edwards gave the college two transforming gifts, an endowment of £30 million and a name, Murray Edwards College.
The college still has all-female students, but we have male Fellows and members of staff. Our unique dining hall, affectionately known as the "Dome" was designed by Chamberlain, Powell and Bonn and completed in 1965. Most of the original buildings are now Grade II listed and have undergone extensive renovation.
Food and Drinks
Full English breakfast is included in the room cost and available in the beautiful Grade II listed dining hall from 8:00 to 9:00am on weekdays and from 8:00 to 9:30am on Saturday and Sunday.
Although we are not able to cater for lunch and dinner, there is a wide range of pubs offering good food and several excellent Indian restaurants all within a 5 -10 minute walk of the college.
If you just need a snack, we have a hot drinks machine in the bar area close to the Porters' Lodge and also snack/cold drinks machine downstairs in the bar area.
The college bar is not available for general use and if open, is reserved for use by guests of private functions happening in college.
Grounds and gardens
We have beautiful, informal gardens, which our guests are welcome to enjoy. The only garden not available is the Fellow's Garden, which is reserved for the Fellows of the college.
Other facilities
The college is home to the unique New Hall Art Collection, which contains nearly 350 contemporary works by women artists. The Collection includes works by Maggi Hambling, Barbara Hepworth and Paula Rego. Much of the art work is on display in public areas of the college, so if you'd like to take an informal tour, an information leaflet is available from the Porters' Lodge.

Customer feedback
We guarantee that all our feedback is genuine and can only be submitted by people who have booked through our websites.
Miss Daniella Maleknasr, September 2011: Very pleasant room, with lovely grounds. Overall very comfortable and enjoyable stay
Prof Douglas Bates, September 2011: All the staff with whom we interacted were friendly, helpful and accommodating. I enjoyed our visit very much. The convenience of being able to stay on campus was a big factor in our enjoyment.
Miss Jessica Tong, August 2011: My room was very pleasant, nicely furnished, comfortable bed, spacious, and very useful large mirror. En suite is good, however, the shower is not designed very well as it was too easy to flood the bathroom floor.
Breakfast was excellent, good variety and very satisfying.
Mr Alistair Corden-lloyd, July 2011: Murray Edwards met our expectations. The rooms are fine, not flashy, but functional, and the location is very good. Just a short walk to the center. The college staff were very helpful, but don't trust the taxi firms.
Mr Ian Mitchelson, July 2011: The staff of Murray Edwards could not have been more helpful or obliging
Miss Sarah Jenkins, July 2011: Had a very successful stay. The porters were very friendly and helpful. We plan to stay again!
Mr Tony Mileman, July 2011: We had a really pleasant stay, everyone was very friendly and helpful. Thank you very much.
Mrs Joy Grant, June 2011: I was pleased with the room and it is nice that there is tea and coffee making facilities. It is so convenient staying on campus.
Dr. K. Malik, August 2010: Very clean, comfortable and quiet work environment. Excellent overall service and a high standard breakfast provided.
Peter Powell, August 2010: Friendly, helpful staff and comfortable accommodation conveniently situated for exploring the city. Will most certainly recommend it to others and make use of the facility again ourselves.
Many thanks,
Peter and Gill Powell
Marjorie Cross, August 2010: Dining Room cold & (early) breakfast plates cold, so hot food went cold quickly. Otherwise, all very much enjoyed & appreciated.
David Lyon, August 2010: The price was only average considering the basic facilities ie no TV, radio etc and the 'institutional' breakfast, although adequate, was not freshly cooked and so a bit cold However, the location was excellent for the city centre
Stuart Shurlock, August 2010: Being on a restricted income, I prefer not to use taxis ! The college info did not mention buses at all except to state there is a stop on the Huntingdon Road. Belatedly, I discovered that the very frequent Citi 7 bus route stops about 150 metres from the college in Histon Road, and also runs direct to/from the station. Definitely worth a mention !
Clare Rourke, August 2010: Very helpful staff in porters lodge and enjoyable stay
Judith Cole, July 2010: Room was very spacious and clean. Very friendly staff at the porters' lodge and at breakfast. The college is a nice walking distance from Cambridge centre.
Stephen Green, July 2010: Was more expensive than a normal B&B. However, would recommend to anybody, excellent, friendly staff, room was large, comfortable and quiet. We arrived 90 minutes early, but room was ready and waiting and next day checked out, but no problem leaving the car in carpark all day. Breakfast was excellent and very substantial. Highly recommended.
Helen Brown, July 2010: Excellent alternative to booking a hotel. Would definitely stay at Murray Edwards again. Car parking facility proved invaluable. Thoroughly recommend all round.
saturnino tascón, July 2010: Murray Edwards College was quite near from the city center, the reception was kind and rooms were right. We only missed a hair-dryer in the rooms and a tv in one of them because the other room had it.
breakfast was great
John Cragg, July 2010: Shower curtain very ineffective !
Availability of car parking relatively close to town centre was useful.
Sheila Cowsley, July 2010: We enjoyed our stay. The location was very convenient for getting to the centre of Cambridge. We found the room comfortable but felt the tariff was a little high. The shower was not very practical as it wet the floor of the whole bathroom. It also required a deep clean and the control was difficult to use. The Reception and dining staff were very helpful. Because of the convenience we would consider staying again.
George Naufal, July 2010: The porter people were absolutely wonderful.
VIVIENNE JANOWSKI, July 2010: Brilliant!! Will definitely come again.
Spotlessly clean, so much so I walked barefooted on the carpet and I rarely do that outside my home.
The porteress (is that what you call a female porter?) was lovely and very helpful.
The shower was amazing. The sheets crisp and clean. The breakfast was yummy but it would have been nice to have been able to take a pot of tea or coffee to the table because my cup of tea got cold real quick...my only quibble!!
Many thanks for the lovely experience.
HELENA BARTON, July 2010: Lovely deluxe room, with TV.
Mrs Sabrina Gwynn, July 2010: Following my booking I received a lot of help in finding somewhere suitable to eat. We enjoyed our meal at the Castle Inn. Fortunately we arrived there at about 8.45pm as it stopped serving meals at 9pm which we hadn't been told!
Our room was well appointed and very comfortable. My father was a little bothered at not being able to find loose sugar to put on his cereal at breakfast. They only had lumps for hot drinks. However this was only a minor point and we very much enjoyed our brief stay.
!
Jacqueline Frye, June 2010: I congratulate whoever devised the idea of booking out rooms to the general public. I wish I'd known about it sooner. High quality accommodation with excellent service.
Fraser Whineray, June 2010: Very pleasant. Porters very helpful. Beautiful college.
Mr and Mrs R Ashton, June 2010: We were very impressed by the cleanliness of the room and the bathroom - wonderful shower! It was very light and airy too.
Bonita Croker, June 2010: Difficult to find. Had a very good stay. Cambridge is lovely. Excellent service. It was nice to be able to park and not pay for parking, stay the night and still see some more sights on the day we left. Thank you very much
